MTB 486 is currently in use as a houseboat in the south of England.  She has no engines, but her hull appears to be in good condition.  There is a sound foundation for her restoration as a memorial to all Canadian sailors who served and died in Coastal Forces.

MTB 486

The last Canadian MTB

Not only do we intend to bring 486 back to Canada, but will also bring back another boat of the same class.  We were looking at a pair of operational former MTBs in Malta, the Motor Vessel Raia and MV Ambra (MTB 506) that were employed as tour boats in Valetta, Malta.  Sadly, Raia has since been scuttled by her owners and her identity will now never be known, but we want to find MTB 506/Ambra a good home in Toronto, Canada as a touring museum ship.

M.V. Raia
(MTB identity unknown)

M.V. Ambra
(formerly MTB 506)

Both 486 and the Maltese boats are British Power Boat 71’ 6” type vessels (known as “G” types in the former Royal Canadian Navy) and were Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs), small fast attack craft used in coastal waters.

Our intent is to raise enough money to bring back MTB 486 and install her in a suitable Canadian museum.  The rescued Maltese boat will be restored to the wartime appearance of the 29th Flotilla.  Then, MTB 506/Ambra would be used as a Royal Canadian Sea Cadet, Navy League Cadet and youth organisation training vessel, and owned and maintained by the CCFT.
